The quieter, upscale end.
Quiet, upscale, couples & families
North Pattaya centers on Wongamat Beach, a calmer, cleaner stretch of sand tucked behind a headland, with condo towers and most of the city's true high-end resorts replacing the guesthouses you'll find further south. It's the pick if you want Pattaya's convenience without being in the middle of it: quieter, safer-feeling after dark, and closer to a genuine resort stay, though there's little to walk to right outside your hotel, so plan on a taxi or scooter for dinner beyond the resort and a 15-20 minute ride if you want Central's nightlife.
Why stay here
You want a real resort stay without being in the middle of Pattaya. Wongamat is the part of the bay that feels like a beach holiday: quiet water, sea-view balconies, kids can run on the sand without dodging bar crowds.
The catch
Limited walkable dining beyond the resort. You'll need a taxi or scooter for dinner outside the hotel grounds, and a 15-20 minute ride if you want Central's nightlife scene.

Love it or leave after one night.
Nightlife, shopping, walkable
This is Pattaya's tourism machine, running at full volume. Beach Road runs the length of it, Walking Street anchors the south end, and in between you get malls, street food, and more restaurants than you could work through in a month. It's the pick if you want nightlife, shopping, restaurants, and beach all within walking distance: the only part of Pattaya where you genuinely don't need a scooter or taxi to fill your days. It's also crowded and loud almost around the clock, and seedy in pockets near Walking Street after dark, so it's not the choice for families wanting a peaceful holiday; stay here for a couple of nights and base yourself somewhere quieter for the rest of the trip if that matters to you.

You want everything under one roof: Beach Road, Walking Street, Central Festival mall, hundreds of restaurants, and the sand across the street. The only part of Pattaya you can fill your days in without a taxi or scooter.

Crowded and loud almost around the clock. Seedy in pockets near Walking Street after dark. Not the choice for families wanting a peaceful holiday; stay here for a couple of nights and base yourself somewhere quieter for the rest of the trip.

The long, calmer stretch.
Space, value, families & long-stay
Jomtien Beach runs roughly 6km south of Pattaya proper, wider and less crowded than Beach Road, with its own promenade and noticeably calmer water. It draws long-stay expats, families, and a well-established LGBTQ-friendly crowd. It's the pick for space and value: a proper stretch of beach without Central's noise, generally lower prices for comparable quality, and its own dining and nightlife just turned down a few notches. The tradeoff is distance. You're 10-20 minutes from Walking Street and Central's malls, so staying here means a taxi every time you want that scene, and some stretches of Jomtien are less developed than others.
Why stay here
You want beach + space + value without Central's noise. Jomtien is a proper stretch of sand with its own dining and nightlife just turned down a few notches, lower prices for comparable quality, and a long-stay/expat community that gives it a real neighbourhood feel.
The catch
Distance from Walking Street and Central's malls. 10-20 minutes by taxi every time you want that scene. Some stretches of Jomtien are less developed than others.
