Phuket is Thailand's biggest island and the country's most-trafficked destination. It earns that. Drive the coast and you pass beach after beach — Patong, Karon, Kata, the long stretch of Bang Tao, the northwest parks — each with its own vibe.
Some are packed with bars and jet skis. Some you can have to yourself in the afternoon. This guide covers the 10 areas worth considering: what the beach is actually like, who it works for, who it doesn't, and which hotels are worth your time at three price points. Kata Beach
The calm one of the big three.
One of Phuket's three big beaches, and the calmest of them. 1.5km of white sand, gentle slope into the water, surfable in green season. The town behind the beach is walkable and family-paced.
Why stay here
You want beach + restaurants + a decent hotel without Patong next door. Kata sits in the middle of the spectrum — busier than Rawai, calmer than Karon.
The catch
It is a popular beach. Don't expect empty sand at noon in December. If you want solitude, head north to Bang Tao or the northwest coast.

Bang Tao Beach
8km of sand, our favorite on the island.
8km of sand on Phuket's northwest side. The south end has the beach clubs and Laguna hotels; head north and the beach empties out fast. Our pick for the best beach on the island.
Why stay here
Long, quiet, no road running behind it. You can walk an hour and see maybe a dozen people. Mid-range to high-end, very little actual budget accommodation.
The catch
No jet skis, no parasailing, very limited nightlife. Budget picks are thin. If you want cheap drinks and go-go bars, this isn't it.

Karon Beach
Big enough to never feel packed.
3.5km of sand with a relaxed vibe. Big enough to never feel packed, smaller than Patong, less family-heavy than Kata. The sunset here is underrated.
Why stay here
Space. Karon is wide and long enough that even in high season you can find a quiet patch. Good mix of mid-range and budget, mostly no road between the resorts and the beach.
The catch
Bangla Plaza has some nightlife that gives off Patong vibes (it isn't, but the energy reads similar). Not much shopping — go to Patong or Phuket Town for that.

Sister property to the Grand. Hillside, smaller, more intimate, with a pool that has a waterfall. Walking path down to the beach.

Beachfront, large pool overlooking the bay, contemporary Asian rooms. Right at the southern end so you can walk to Kata for variety.

Kasemsuk Guesthouse
Family-run, basic but clean, few minutes from the sand. The staff is the reason regulars come back.

Patong Beach
Love it or leave after one night.
Phuket's tourism machine. Beautiful beach, hundreds of restaurants, shopping malls, Bangla Walking Street, jet skis, parasailing, mass everything. You either love it or leave after one night.
Why stay here
You want everything under one roof: restaurants, bars, shopping, activities, beach, transport. It's the only place on Phuket where you don't need a scooter to get around.
The catch
Crowded, loud, seedy in pockets. Not for families looking for peace. If you want quiet beaches, stay here for one or two nights and base yourself elsewhere.

Kamala Beach
Patong's quiet neighbor.
2km of sand just north of Patong, but feels like a different island. Kept more of its Thai village feel — local restaurants, beachside bungalows, expat regulars.
Why stay here
Quiet beach, real Thai restaurants, swim-friendly water, families and long-stay visitors. Newer resorts at the north end are changing the vibe — but slowly.
The catch
Development is coming. The InterContinental and Novotel at the north end have shifted the tone. It's still more Thai than Patong, but the clock is ticking.

Nai Harn Beach
The prettiest beach on Phuket.
Southwest coast, in a cove, white sand, turquoise water, green hills on both sides. Consistently rated one of the prettiest beaches on Phuket — and the recent rush of development hasn't ruined it yet.
Why stay here
Prettiest beach on the island without the Patong crowds. Decent surf in front of The Nai Harn. Real food scene developing around the lake.
The catch
Limited beachfront accommodation. Most hotels are up the hill or inland. Area is hilly — rent a scooter or you'll rely on taxis.

Inland, no sea view, but clean and friendly. Close to Nai Harn Lake and the local restaurants. Good value.

Phuket Old Town
Not a beach. The island's soul.
Not a beach — the island's historic Sino-Portuguese center. Restored shophouses, museums, street food, the best coffee shops in Phuket. Most people day-trip here; staying is underrated.
Why stay here
Architecture, food, the Sunday Night Market (Thalang Road closes off and turns into one of the best markets in Thailand). Hotel prices are noticeably lower than the beach zones.
The catch
Closest beach is Patong at 25 minutes. If beach time is the whole point, stay on a beach. If food, culture, and a slower pace matter more, stay here for at least one night.

Surin Beach
Where the celebrities stay.
Phuket's luxury strip. Wide beach, golden sand, almost exclusively top-end resorts. Celebrities, expat retirees, anyone with a serious budget.
Why stay here
You want a luxury resort experience with a quiet beach. Surin is upscale without being isolated — Bang Tao is 15 minutes north, Patong 20 minutes south.
The catch
Quiet at night. No real nightlife. Limited mid-range and almost no budget. Dinner options are mostly inside the resorts.

Northwest Coast
22km of mostly empty sand.
Sirinat National Park — Nai Thon, Nai Yang, Mai Khao beaches, 22km of mostly untouched coastline. Quiet, low-density, 10–15 minutes from the airport.
Why stay here
You want to switch off. Miles of empty sand, no nightlife, no shopping, just the resort and the beach. Perfect for the first or last night of a Phuket trip.
The catch
Limited dining outside the resorts. Beach litter in some stretches (tide brings it in). Budget options are thin. You'll need a vehicle if you want to leave the resort.

Not a swimming beach. A living one.
Southern tip of Phuket. The beach itself isn't for swimming — fishing boats, murky water — but it's the launchpad for island-hopping tours, the seafood restaurants are the best value on the island, and the Muay Thai gyms keep long-stayers coming back.
Why stay here
Affordable seafood, Muay Thai training, expat community, base for Coral Island and Racha Island tours. The closest real Phuket feel to living like a local.
The catch
The beach is not a beach. You'll drive (or scooter) to Nai Harn or Ya Nui for sand and swimming. No nightlife, very limited shopping.
